Judge: Voters Lacking ID Must Vote Naked

with one comment

(HARRISBURG) – Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson ruled today that Pennsylvanians who lack an acceptable form of photo ID will be required to strip naked before voting on November 6.

Many backers of Simpson’s decision striking down the most publicized components of the Voter ID law initially overlooked the portion of his ruling that could force tens of thousands of individuals to disrobe before casting their votes for president and several other contests.

A portion of Simpson’s ruling reads: “While I accept Petitioners’ argument that the risk of voter disenfranchisement remains high with the identification requirements spelled out within the law in question, I find it necessary to somehow uphold the original intent of the law, which its backers have made clear is to humiliate targeted portions of the population. I feel a ‘strip naked’ provision finds important common ground in this argument.”

The decision states further: “Photo ID on which the voter in question is shown completely naked will not satisfy the provisions of this ruling.”

Simpson’s decision sparked a new round of debate on Internet message boards and social media, along with a lot of predictable jokes in which phrases such as “pull the lever” and “hanging chad” were included as lame punch lines.

  1. No less a walking punchline than Gov. Corbett has characterized the latest version of the law as a “soft roll-out.” He said “soft.” Heh-heh.
